29 year old Ana Gledis Miranda is a biologist working at the Pringle and E.O. Wilson Laboratory in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National park. She is walking down nearby Mount Socone, on her way to climb into Lico’s forest. Like most forests in Mozambique Mt Socone is not isolated by a cliff, and is being cut down rapidly for slash and burn agriculture. She carried out surveys there to develop a baseline for what a disturbed forest looks like in this region. “What we need is to have more education about how to take care of the land.”
